The result was remarkable accuracy for its era—Bulova guaranteed Accutron watches to within approximately one minute per month.

But the Accutron had another unmistakable characteristic: it didn’t tick—it hummed. That rapidly vibrating tuning fork produced a distinctive high-pitched tone, while the seconds hand appeared to glide unusually smoothly around the dial. Accutron describes the characteristic sound as an F-sharp hum, turning the watch’s revolutionary technology into something its owner could actually hear.

And that extraordinary precision soon took Accutron technology far beyond the wrist. Bulova says approximately 2,000 Accutron timers and timing packages were ultimately used across 46 NASA missions, appearing in applications ranging from cockpit instruments to scientific experiment packages. The Accutron Astronaut wristwatch itself went into space aboard Mercury-Atlas 9 in May 1963, while Accutron watches were also used by pilots of the X-15 rocket plane.
